Living on a fault line, writing you letters from my home
The ground keeps on movin, but I’m still choosin not to roam

Looking at the mountain, rivers like a fountain, flowing free
Quenching my desire, putting out the fire that tortures me

The rain is gonna fall, the pain is gonna come sometimes
The rain is gonna fall, the rain is gonna fall

Sleeping in the subway, waking from a dream of you and me
I see your reflection staring at the child I used to be

Playing in the pulpit, spying on the men who make the grace
They laugh about confessions, sharing impressions of each case

The rain is gonna fall, the pain is gonna come sometimes
The rain is gonna fall, the rain is gonna fall, the rain is gonna fall

Holding on to nothing, letting go of something I can see
Living on a fault line isn’t the place I wanna be

The rain is gonna fall, the pain is gonna come sometimes
The rain is gonna fall, the rain is gonna fall
It’s gonna fall for you and me
Oh the rain is gonna fall

Notes: The Rain Is Gonna Fall was written when I lived at a house that looked across at the mountain called Tahquitz Peak, which was named by the Native Americans for an evil spirit that is considered something akin to the God of Earthquakes. When I lived there we had many tremblers shake through the mountains and all hours of day and night.

During this time I was going through a divorce and things were a little up in the air, but I took great comfort in looking across the valley at the mountain after a good rain and seeing waterfalls coming down from the peak named after the God of Earthquakes...perhaps cooling him (and my emotions) down.

It made me realize that a very important dynamic in life is that rain falls sometimes, but that it heals at the same time. It's also a good idea to avoid the obvious pitfalls of putting oneself right in the middle of a fault line...especially when a big storm is coming in.
